This is another pair of trousers custom made on my recent trip to Hong Kong. When I saw this season’s Ralph Lauren dhoti pants I fell in love with the style, but the color and proportions were all wrong for me. I’m 5′2″, most alternative proportioned trousers are made for at least 5′8″ in my opinion. Making these took some trial and error, figuring out where to place the crotch to give it the full dhoti effect but also to make sure I still look like I have legs was the biggest challenge. Also the width of the pleats changed twice making them wider, it became less scrunchy in the center when my legs are together. Since my tailor had never seen pants like these it also took time to convince him that these were actually fashionable. He grinned still unconvinced when I was trying on the final product, spreading my legs to see the full fanning effect completely giddy.

Those trousers look gorgeous! I’ve never gotten anything custom-made, but yours fit so perfectly that I might be convinced otherwise.

This is way too advanced a tailoring endeavor for me, working with pleats and volume. If you notice, most of my projects fit either close to the body or are straight-cut. You are incredibly patient! And, of course, it pays off. Excellent, excellent finished product.

Ooh! They turned out beautifully! I LOVE my Harem pants, and this weekend bought a more ‘refined’ version of them, and am in love!
How I would love to have a tailor-made pair!

These are beautiful. I’m glad that you were able to get these tailored to look good on your stature. I’m only 2 inches taller than you — gives me hope!

wow I’ve never been a huge fan of this silhouette but maybe that’s only because they never were fitted this properly on me!! I love how perseverant you are when you know you like a shape that you’ll go out to get it custom tailored. All the way in HK at that
mm about waking up puffy after late night salt binges.. yeah they are a sad reality especially for us asian girls!! nothing like a ice mask on the eyes to de-puff hehe.

I love the pants and the blazer is so cute
how long did it take for the pants (making the patterna and at the tailors?)
on May 23rd, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Naka: I dropped off my designs on Friday afternoon and had 2 fittings on saturday. Most tailors in HK do not work mondays so I picked up 3 pairs of pants and one shirt on Monday at noon. It was a bit rushed at the end but usually 3 days is enough.

i LOVE both trousers you had custom-made. i’m even shorter than you are – i’m 5′1″ when i stand up straight… so i can relate to the pants dilemma. good job on both pairs!
